Arrogate 141

Arrogate displayed yet another "unbelievable" (a term that has overused) performance in the 2017 Dubai World Cup.  He showed his stardom in the Travers, and his toughness against the top-form California Chrome in the Breeders' Cup Classic.  In the Pegasus World Cup, I was more sorry about Chrome's loss than Arrogate domination.  But in the Dubai World Cup, it is more like "what universe does he come from!?"

Timeform gives Arrogate a rating of 141, the highest of any North American trained horse since the company started comprehensively rating horses in North America for the last 25 years or so.

For the record, below are the Timeform rating for major North America trained horses:

  • Arrogate 141
  • American Pharoah 138
  • California Chrome 138
  • Cigar 138
  • Easy Goer 137
  • Sunday Silence 137
  • Ghostzapper 137

Gun Runner, who ran a very good 2nd place behind Arrogate, is rated at 130, which is by no means cheap.

  • Derby (12f), second to Shahrastani (135)
  • Eclipse (10f), def. Triptych (132)
  • King George (12f), def. Shardari (134)
  • Arc (12f), def. Bering (136)

  • Queen Anne (8f) def. Excelebration (133)

July 2015 - Shaman Ghost and Speightster

Shaman Ghost is the first Queen's Plate winner for Frank Stronach since home-bred Awesome Again in 1997.  Awesome Again is of course a leading sire, and also grandsire of Shaman Ghost, whose sire Ghostzapper is also a home-bred of Stronach.  Both Awesome Again and Ghostzapper had won the Breeders' Cup Classic for Stronach.

When Awesome Again won the Queen's Plate in 1997, he was only a maiden winner.  He then won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga after his Queen's Plate victory.

Here is Awesome Again's Queen's Plate:

The day before, WinStar Farm's home-bred Speightster, by Speightown, won the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont.  His dam Dance Swiftly is a full sister to Dance Smartly;  also a half sister to Smart Strike, who is yet another Canadian-bred leading sire born in the early/mid 1990s.  WinStar bought Dance Swiftly for $2.4 million from Sam-Son Farm in the 1999 Keeneland November Sales.

Both Smart Strike and Awesome Again were assigned Intermediate / Classic chef-de-race.

December 2010 Part 2 - Xin Xu Lin

Funny there is a Brazilian-bred colt that has a name like Mandarin. Don't forget this name - he is Xin Xu Lin, who won the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini at Hipodromo San Isidro over the weekend.

He wired the field and covered the 2400 metres distance in 2.31.20 on a yielding turf.
