December 2010 Part 2 - Xin Xu Lin

Funny there is a Brazilian-bred colt that has a name like Mandarin. Don't forget this name - he is Xin Xu Lin, who won the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini at Hipodromo San Isidro over the weekend.

He wired the field and covered the 2400 metres distance in 2.31.20 on a yielding turf.

December 2010 Part 1 - Pool Play

Every year, the feature race on the final day at Woodbine is the 14 furlongs Valedictory Stakes. Recent winners include Grade 1 winners Marsh Side and Cloudy's Knight. I always believe that the standard of this race worths every penny of the $150,000 purse, and if the Breeders' Cup Marathon is being upgraded to Grade 2 in 2011, then Valedictory Stakes should be upgraded to a Grade 3.

The race this year was won by odds-on favourite Pool Play (5yo h by Silver Deputy, out of Zuri Ridge, by Cox's Ridge). He finished 3/4 length ahead of second choice Eye of the Leopard, with another 1 1/4 length back further thirf choice in Helicoper, and fourth choice Perfect Shower finished fourth. These four finished in the exact same order in the 13 furlongs Valedictory prep held 4 weeks ago. The form in the race cannot be more up to the standard.

Pool Play now has a career record of 24-5-5-5 with earnings of $565,391.

Another personal favourite of the final day racecard is the 15 furlongs starter allowance. This is the consolation race for those claimers that are not good enough to run in the stakes. Alezzandro, the 2007 Prince of Wales winner, seemed to have found his niche now at marathon distance. He finished 8th, 12 lengths behind Pool Play in the Valedictory prep, but he was good enough to be the second choice in this full field of 14 runners. He held off third choice Active Play by 1 1/2, and the pair were miles ahead of the rest of the field.
